MUSEUM MANAGEMENT
THE CHANGI MUSEUM PTE LTD
In 2001, the Singapore Tourism Board appointed Singapore History Consultants to manage the new Changi Chapel and Museum having a proven track record in developing and operating public education programmes (for schools, military groups, corporate organizations) since 1995. The Changi Museum Pte Ltd (TCMPL) was set up as an associate company to undertake this responsibility.
Under the management of TCMPL, The Changi Museum was set up as a free-access museum dedicated to the memory of all civilians and prisoners of war who suffered under the Japanese Occupation of Singapore from 1942 to 1945. The museum's primary responsibility was its educational and social role. It raised awareness of the Pacific War, and in particular relayed to students and tourists alike, an appreciation of the suffering and sacrifice of civilians and POWs who were incarcerated in Singapore. It was a must-see for war veterans as well as visitors interested in understanding the history of the Pacific War in Malaya and Singapore.
The Museum received international praise for its sensitive and poignant portrayal of the war years in Singapore, and regularly hosted foreign dignitaries and diplomatic staff. It developed strong links with museums and research agencies overseas that contribute alternative perspectives to the story of the defence of Singapore and became a focal point for researchers, war veterans and remembrance / commemorative events.
The Changi Museum was managed by TCMPL from 2001 - 2018. From 2017 - 2018, the museum was jointly managed by TCMPL and National Heritage
Board (NHB). From 2019, management of the museum was passed back to the State.
